It’s fast

I’ve criticized page builders in the past because they can have a negative effect on the performance of a website.

However, this isn’t the case with Spectra. After installation, the effect on performance is minimal.

If you use it with something like Airlift, you can still get green scores on Google Pagespeed without a problem.

Loads of cool templates

To help you create great looking pages and posts quickly and easily Spectra is loaded with templates.

You’ll find templates for sections as well as complete pages.

They’ve all been professionally designed, which makes working with Spectra a dream. You can create eye-catching layouts in minutes.

Extra blocks (lots of them!)

One of the best things that happens when you install Spectra is that you get lots of extra blocks you can use when crafting your content (don’t worry, you can turn off the ones you don’t need).

Having extra blocks gives you far more flexibility when you’re publishing posts and pages.

No need for extra plugins.

Forms

Every website needs forms, right?

Spectra includes a form block so you can easily add simple forms.

It’s not for complex uses, for sure; for that, go for something like WPForms or Gravity, but it’s perfect for a basic contact form or similar.

What I don’t like

Spectra’s not perfect. Here’s a couple of things I spotted that could be a problem

It uses the block editor

This might not be a bad thing if you’ve got experience with creating sites with the WordPress block editor.

But for newcomers and those not familiar with WordPress it might be a problem.

Other page builders like Elementor and Divi are far more graphical and user-friendly with their interface.

A learning curve

There is a bit of a learning curve with Spectra.

Especially when using things like the container block and the popup builder.

It’s not too much of a problem as more and more tutorials are being published on YouTube and other places all the time.

With a bit of playing around and a few videos you’ll be creating some wonderful things with Spectra.

Divi comes with Divi Builder, which allows real-time design changes and offers over 2300 pre-made layouts. You can do a lot with Divi once you get to grips with the builder, which can sometimes be confusing.

Once you get used to the Divi Builder you’ll find it easy to customize one of the many starter layouts and make a fantastic website.

What I love about Divi

• Huge amount of templates (maybe too many for some)
• Built-in split-testing tool to help you increase conversions
• Magic colors; Divi learns the colors you are using and makes it easier to keep everything on brand
• Good Woocommerce integration

What I don’t like about Divi

• The builder can be a little overwhelming for beginners
• It’s not the fastest theme, but pretty decent for a theme with a page builder

Genesis Pro

Genesis Pro offers a secure, SEO-optimized foundation for WordPress sites. It’s a framework you can use to build your site from scratch.

However, unless you’re a web developer, you’ll probably want to use one of their many high-quality child themes (think starter templates) to get you started.

What I love about GenesisPro

• Huge amount of templates (maybe too many for some)
• Access to all StudioPress themes, not just GenesisPro
• Easy to use and create stuff quickly
• Loads of beautiful blocks!

What I don’t like about GenesisPro

• It’s pretty expensive at $360 per year
• WP Engine are all over it

OptimizePress – Great for Landing Pages

This one is a bit different from the rest of the themes featured in this article. It’s designed for landing pages. A landing page is a high-converting sales page used to build sales funnels.

If you’re running any paid ad, email, or social media campaign, this is the theme you need to use.

What I love about OptimiziePress

• Perfect for marketing campaigns, like paid ads
• Lots of templates
• You don’t have to edit too much – The templates are

What I don’t like about OptimizePress

• No good for sites that aren’t landing pages

Thrive Themes

I built an affiliate website live on YouTube a few years ago with Thrive Themes. It turned out really well, and looked fantastic.

I like working with thrive. The builder works well, and it has lots of sweet-looking blocks that enable you to create pages quickly.

What I love about Thrive Themes

• Easy to put together high-quality, great-looking pages
• Add the Thrive Suite of tools and you can do everything with Thrive, including Opt-ins, quizzes and split testing
• Very responsive and useful support system
• It’s good value, especially if you take the complete suite.

What I don’t like about Thrive Themes

• The editor can be a little frustrating at times. Only a little mind, generally it’s very easy and efficient to use

Popcorn Theme – Designed for Affiliate Marketers

Popcorn Theme has been designed for content-focused affiliate and niche websites. It comes full of patterns and blocks that enable you to publish great-looking, engaging content.

It’s perfect for product reviews, informational content, and comparison posts.

OceanWP

OceanWP is another solid general-purpose premium WordPress theme. It has similar to feel to it as Astra IMO although you might Astra a bit easier to use as the option locations in Ocean aren’t that intuitive.

You can use Elementor with OceanWP or just stick to the WordPress block editor.

A nice unique feature with OceanWP is that you get access to loads of icons and stock images.

What I love about OceanWP

• Comes with a sweet mega menu
• The starter templates are very well designed
• Includes access to icons and stock images
• Tight Woocommerce Integration

What I don’t like about OceanWP

• A bit slow compared to other themes (can be improved with plugins etc)
• Options can be a bit confusing

GeneratePress

This theme is built for SPEED! If you’re looking to squeeze every last nanosecond of speed out of your website, then GeneratePress might be for you.

If you like documentation with your theme, then GeneratePress has you covered. Everything is documented in detail so you should be able to find out what you need to. The team at GeneratePress also back this all up with highly responsive support.

You also get a good range of starter sites too, which is always good.

What I love about GeneratePress

• It’s fast. Very Fast
• Well documented
• Good collection of well designed starter sites
• Highly customizable

What I don’t like about GeneratePress

• The learning curve maybe too steep for beginners
• If you like drag-and-drop when editing, then this theme might not be for you

X

I used to run this website (wpeagle.com) with X theme. I switched to Popcorn Theme but that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy building with X.

It’s a really powerful theme, and you can make a really sharp-looking website with it.

X might be better suited for website builders with experience in making websites, as you can do some really cool stuff with it (if you know what you’re doing).

What I love about X

• Super Good value for money
• Eye-catching designs blocks and elements
• Lots of options when creating responsive designs. Easy make things different sizes etc on different screen sizes
• Good support
• Includes Ubermenu and other plugins for free

What I don’t like about X

• The X builder is powerful but not as intuitive as others

Astra

Astra is a favorite among WordPress experts. The free version is pretty good, but if you upgrade to the Pro version you get a ton of great features.

You can pretty much use whatever pagebuilder you like with Astra; Elementor, Beaver or the built in editor.

Astra also has great Woocommerce integration making it a popular choice for e-commerce websites.

What I love about Astra

• Good selection of starter sites
• Compatible and tested with lots of plugins
• Good performance for a theme with so many features
• Built in SEO schema markup
• Great value for money

What I don’t like about Astra

• Every other WordPress website is made with Astra (Maybe this is a good thing? )
• If you overdo it with the page builders and plugins it can affect performance

Avada

Avada is possibly the most popular premium WordPress theme ever. They’ve nearly sold 1,000,000 copies!

Avada is great value for money with a very low price tag. You get a lot for your money too as it comes packed with features like mega menus, performance optimization and a flexible builder.

What I love about Avada

• Really good value for money
• 92 nice-looking starter sites to get you going
• Setup wizard saves a lot of time
• Works well with Woocoomerce – you can easily edit your shops pages

What I don’t like about Avada

• You’ll need good hosting to run Avada, especially on busy websites
• You have to use their builder. This could make it tricky to change theme if you want to in the future.

Enfold

Enfold comes from the old school. This theme has been around for a long time. I’ve been using themes from the developer, Kriesi, for over 10 years!

Version 5 brings with it loads of new starter sites, more animations, galleries and so much more.

Enfold also has really good WPML integration making it perfect if you’re going to be creating a multi-language website.

What I love about Enfold

• Very easy to use
• Great documentation and support
• High performance
• Lots of animations (if that’s what you’re in to)

• You have to use their page builder (which is good)

When you’re choosing an E-commerce theme you want to check that the theme is:

• Fully Woocommerce Compatible: The theme needs to be compatible to work properly with Woocommerce. Most themes will work with Woocommerce but you really want a theme with tight integration and built-in options so you have complete control over the look and feel of your store and it’s functionality.
• Styled Woocommerce Pages: Check how the cart, checkout, my account and other Wooocommerce pages look. Make sure they look great and that you have options within the theme to customize and style them.

• Minimalistic Design: The design is simple and focused so your visitors can easily buy your products!
• High-level Support and Documents: As this theme is from Woocommerce team it comes with in-depth documentation and great support

What I don’t like about Storefront

And that’s because it’s good. And it does Ecommerce well too.

What I love about Astra Theme

• Free Starter Sites: A good selection of free Woocommerce starter sites.
• Works well with Elementor: With the Elementor page builder, it’s easy to put stuff together.
• Regular updates: It’s such a popular theme that the development team are constantly adding new features
• Good looker: Lots of great looking templates. Even more with the pro version.
• Excellent Woocommerce Integration: Super tight integration with Woocommerce giving you complete control over all aspects of your customers’ journey through your website.

What I don’t like about Astra Theme

• Limited Features with Free version: You’ll probably want to do something, but you won’t be able to without upgrading to Pro.
• Everyone uses Astra: Not very unique, but I guess that doesn’t matter.

Best Free WordPress Themes for Business Sites

Business sites need a more professional design than content-focused sites. Of course, business sites should have content, but the most important pages will be the About and Services pages.

When choosing a WordPress theme for a business website think about:

• Ready to use templates: You’ll want you website to look slick. By using templates you can create professionally designed pages easily
• Contact Forms and CTAs: You’re probably going to want sales leads from your website. To attract these and increase your conversion rate, make sure the theme supports major contact form plugin and has some cool CTA features.
• Regular Updates and Support: Your website is going to be an important part of your business. Make sure it stays online by choosing a theme with good updates and support. You may need to upgrade to a premium theme to ensure you get the level you require.
• Plenty of options: You’re going to want to customize your site so it fits the uniqueness of your brand. To do this you’ll need a theme with plenty of customization options.

Ollie

Ollie is an incredible free theme.

I only discovered it recently when Phil from Spidrweb introduced me to it.

I was blown away!

It looks like it should be a pro theme – plus it’s also packed with loads of patterns and templates that you’d expect to pay for.

And it’s the built-in templates that I think make this great for a business website. It has patterns for about us, testimonials, pricing tables and so much more!

Of course, it’s got all the usual stuff covered too, like speed and responsiveness.

If you’re looking to build a sweet-looking business site with WordPress, start with Ollie before you try any other themes.

What I love about Ollie

• Looks like a Pro Theme: This theme does not look FREE at all!
• Setup Wizard: Get up and running fast by following the built in Wizard
• Loads of FREE Patterns: Most themes don’t give you 40 patterns when you pay. Ollie gives you over 50 for free!
• Business Suitable Patterns: Among the 50 free patterns are some really professional-looking ones, like pricing and team members that are perfect for a business website.
• Uses Site Editor: No page builders required. Just use WordPress to create beautiful things.

What I don’t like about Ollie

• Limited Post Layout Options: The posts look fine but aren’t too flexible. Probably not a big deal for business sites though.
• Not written for Woocommerce: Not specifically compatible with Woocommerce but it would probably work ok if you needed it to.

GeneratePress

GeneratePress is a very well-respected theme. A very well-put-together theme with lightweight code and lots of flexibility.

With GeneratePress you can create a fantastic business site. The one problem is that you need to know what you’re doing.

If you don’t, they do have a ton of great starter sites for business, but you’ll need to upgrade to premium to access them.

What I love about GeneratePress

• Extremely flexible: You can create whatever you can imagine with this theme.
• Super-duper fast: Some say GP is the fastest WordPress theme you can get.
• Really Responsive: GP looks stunning on all screens.
• Works with Page Builders: To help you get creative you can use page builders like Elementor.
• The best code: GP has some of the cleanest most efficient code available in a WordPress theme.

What I don’t like about GeneratePress

• Templates (starter sites) are only with the Premium Version: GP has tons of great templates to get you started, but you have to be a premium member to get your hands on them.
• Might be hard for beginners: This builds on the first reason. If you’re new to this you’ll want the starter sites to have a chance of achieving what you want.

Blocksy

Blocksy is a really cool theme.

I like it because it works well with WordPress block editor so you’d need to use a page builder like Elementor – although you can if you want us a it’s compatible with a number of popular builders.

Blocksy is ultra-customizable. You can change everything!

But don’t worry! If customizing loads of stuff isn’t your thing, blocksy comes with lots of free starter site templates that don’t need a lot of changing to create a sweet site.

What I love about Blocksy

• Good selection of Free starter sites: Blocksy has lots of templates to get you started.
• Beautiful Typography: Somehow text just looks sweet with this theme
• Works well with WordPress editors: Blocksy works well with the built-in editor so you don’t need to use a page builder.
• Real-time customizer: Edit and see changes in real time.
• Fast Page Loads: Blocksy is nice and fast. Which is good

What I don’t like about Blocksy

• You might need to use a page builder: Blocksy does work well with the native WordPress editors but for more complex designs you might need to use a page builder
• Limited Free version: The free version is quite limited.

Astra

Astra makes the list again.

For the same reasons, I chose it as a great theme for e-commerce. It’s well built and has everything needed to create a professional business site.

The free version comes with LOADS of starter site templates for business and service-related websites.

What I love about Astra

• Lots of free Business templates: A great selection of good-looking business starter sites.
• Works well with Elementor: With the Elementor page builder, it’s easy to put stuff together.
• Regular updates: It’s such a popular theme that the development team are constantly adding new features
• Good looker: Lots of great looking templates. Even more with the pro version.
• Custom Header and Footer Options: Add call to actions, phone number and other business information to the header and footer of your site.

What I don’t like about Astra

• Limited features: You’re missing out on a TON of features if you don’t upgrade to Pro.

Neve

Neve is a great theme and I always find myself including it best of theme lists.

It has loads of good-looking templates, stacks of features and is super fast. What more do you need?

• Mobile First: Neve is designed with small screens in mind. And it shows.
